Rev. Dr. Harry Gardner – Doctor of Divinity ('77, '26)

Biography

Rev. Dr. Harry Gardner’s lifetime of service represents an extraordinary contribution to the Church, to theological education, and to Acadia University. As a graduate of Acadia Divinity College and later as its President and Dean of Theology (from 2008 to 2019), he has embodied the highest ideals of faithful Christian leadership, academic excellence, and pastoral devotion.

In his capacity as President and Dean of Theology, he faithfully refined curriculum and expanded research opportunities to provide a spiritually robust and foundational learning experience for students. In recognition of his far-reaching contributions, the Board of Trustees named him President Emeritus of the Divinity College in 2021.

Throughout his ministry, Harry has been widely sought for his wisdom in conflict resolution, his steady guidance in times of institutional change, and his ability to strengthen organizational structures with clarity and grace.

His influence has extended well beyond Atlantic Canada through denominational leadership, global Baptist engagement, and significant service with the Association of Theological Schools, where his counsel and leadership have been deeply valued.

Yet, above all else, he is known as a pastor. Over decades of preaching, mentoring, and pastoral care – in congregations, classrooms, funerals, and moments of quiet encouragement – Harry has demonstrated a rare gift for making each person feel seen, heard, and valued. He is deeply loved for his compassion, humility, and genuine concern for everyone he meets.
